Mindarie Marina protecting the marine environment

Screen Shot 2019-02-28 at 2.48.49 PMThe Marina, Mindarie has joined a growing number of businesses operating in a marine environment in taking action to clean up the ocean by installing a Seabin.

The Seabin is a floating rubbish bin that is located in the water at marinas, docks, yacht clubs and commercial ports, and works by moving up and down with the tide, collecting all floating rubbish.

Water is sucked in from the surface and passes through a catch bag inside the Seabin, with a submersible water pump capable of displacing 25.000 LPH (litres per hour), plugged directly into 110/220 V outlet. The water is then pumped back into the marina leaving litter and debris trapped in the catch bag to be disposed of properly.

The Marina, Mindarie Director of Operations David Bornmann has been liaising with Seabin since May 2016 and was delighted to see it installed last Friday by Shorewater Marina, who have the rights in WA.

“When I first heard of this initiative of a unique floating rubbish bin, that was able to be installed in a Marina to collect waste, it peaked my interest,” Mr Bornmann said. “The fact it was an invention of two local surfers from Perth added to the intention to be involved and have one for our Marina as soon as it was available.”

Mr Bornmann said operating a business in a marine environment came with enormous social and ethical responsibility. “The Seabin is a necessary investment and one we are very proud to be making for the future of the environment,” he said.
