Bringing Back the Burger

The life of Menu Magazine is an interesting one, we get to see a lot of what WA has to offer on the food scene and stay up to date with current food trends and new, up and coming restaurants.

Almost ten years ago, Menu was just being established and the first place to ever be reviewed was a little restaurant called Monza in Leederville. It is therefore quite fitting that ten years on, we are back at the very same location to review an up and coming restaurant specialising in one of WA’s current food trends, The Burger Bistro.

Having been around in Shafto Lane, Perth for a couple of years now, The Burger Bistro took up it’s second home in Leederville, opening in December last year and has certainly made a name for itself around the Leederville locals already.

It’s no secret that the good old burger is not a new culinary creation, but the beauty of the burger has been revamped and revitalised by the owners of The Burger Bistro, Chris Rose and brothers’ Terry and Owen Chua. Indeed these guys see the burger as one of the ultimate vehicles for expressing any number of flavour combinations that categorise Australia’s varied produce and cultural backgrounds.

Keeping true to their mantra “burgers as they should be”, The Burger Bistro has addressed many of the wrongdoings brought about by the fast food industry. Sourcing only high quality ingredients from producers such as Mt Barker’s Free Range Chicken and Plantagenet Pork, WA’s premium Dorper Lamb, Certified Australian Angus Beef and New Norcia Bakeries spelt sourdough buns, these burgers may be some of the best in the business.

We sat down in the trendy restaurant and savoured the best selling burgers to see for ourselves what the burger has evolved into. ‘The big smoke’ is available in beef and chicken and incorporates that smoky, charred, barbecue flavour with tender, juicy meat, crispy pancetta, a swiss Emmental cheese and crusty-topped burger bun. ‘Miss Saigon’ is best described as a little piece of South East Asia with hints of lemongrass, garlic, fresh mint and basic with a hit of chilli in each bite. ‘The rose and thyme’ combines such classic flavours of rosemary and thyme herbs and The Burger Bistro’s own garlic mayonnaise.

When searching for a satisfying burger, there are a few key elements that we look for and The Burger Bistro has perfected the balance of these. Each burger utilises quality ingredients that look and taste as they should (e.g. 100% beef is actually made up of 100% beef). The specially made bun from New Norcia Bakeries has crunch and flavour as well as a soft centre and lastly, the mixed salad greens and uniquely flavoured sauces tie the textures and flavours together to create a well balanced burger.

The Burger Bistro ensures that all burgers incorporate this start to finish approach of combining the best of ingredients to create a harmony of flavours. All of the burgers on the ever expanding menu are a tribute to The Burger Bistro’s reinstatement of the humble burger in the public’s eye.

The City store is open five days a week for lunch and dinner and is fully licensed. The Leederville restaurant is fully licensed and open seven days for lunch and dinner (including take away options). On Wednesday evenings you will find drink specials to complement any burger of your choice with new ideas such as live music and the like not too far away.
