An Interesting Brew
Opposite Perth Arena in Wellington Street, The Best Brew Bar & Kitchen goes with the flow. Dynamism and agility are management’s buzz words, keeping a close eye on what’s on at the Arena and flexing to follow suit. When Hugh Jackman and Robbie Williams were in town bringing crowds of women to the Arena, The Best Brew Bar & Kitchen put on special cocktails, for Cold Chisel the focus was on blokey food, beer and dark spirits, and the Wiggles saw treats for kids appear on the menu.
Catering for Arena crowds isn’t all they do, being a great CBD lunch spot, an after-work drinks venue and local for the people living nearby and in West Perth.
The meals we tasted included smoked salmon on a wonderful bed of salad including strawberries, blueberries and tangy chunks of goat cheese. The recommended beer pairing was Little Creature’s Dog Days and there was a nice fruity synchronicity.
The craft beers on tap are mostly Little Creatures and James Squire with two taps that rotate other interesting local brews.
We sampled a plate of ribs so tender the meat was falling off the bone, coated in a smokey dark sauce, full of flavour but not sweet and jammy. The ribs were served with beans in a tomato sauce that the chef makes from scratch, shoe-string fries and a dollop of fresh coleslaw.
Next was something from the dessert menu that came out looking so pretty we paused to simply admire it for a minute – a classic combination of crispy-gooey brownies, home-made ice-cream and fresh berries – every element excelled.
There’s plenty more on the menu including share plates and a good range of mains. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options are clearly listed, along with chilli icons by some of the sauce options for those who like a bit of heat.
The restaurant is part of Four Points by Sheraton, the four-star version of the international Sheraton hotel brand, allowing it to step down a little from the five-star formalities; focus on craft beer instead of fine wine, and to dress up in basketball jerseys on Arena basketball nights. While the hotel and venue have been around for a long time, with its new menu and new attitude it is well worth getting reacquainted with.
