Americana in the Heart of Freo

Right in the heart of Freo, just a step back from the main hustle and bustle of the famous cappuccino strip on South Terrace, is Frisco’s American Bistro and Grill, the name being short for San Francisco in the same way that Freo is to Fremantle. With an emphasis on good American family dining, their menu is a fusion of Italian, French, German and Creole influences, a variety of cuisine that’s very popular in well known cities such as New York & New Jersey.

There’s something to suit absolutely everyone’s tastebuds, including the little ones. There’s Pasta dishes such as the Fettuccini Kentucky, a good range of pizzas, seafood dishes, sumptuous salads, hot dogs and burgers – why not put the famous Frisco Burger to the test? Or try one of their American hot dogs? For a bit of spice there’s the San Diego Chilli Dog. Don’t forget to leave room for dessert, how about a delicious slice of New York cheesecake to satisfy your sweet tooth?PieSmall

The décor is fresh and bright inside Frisco’s, a cheery atmosphere with hints of Americana, there’s plenty of room for a large family, party or corporate dinner, but still leaving a nice quiet area for a romantic dinner for two if you choose. There’s also an alfresco area if you’d like to sit out in the Fremantle sunshine. Frisco’s isn’t licensed, so for a corkage fee you may BYO.

My introduction to the menu was the Louisiana club prawns. They were fresh and perfectly cooked, sitting in a bowl of special Louisiana style sauce with hints of chilli, lemon, garlic and white wine, this made for a very nice entrée.

Next came the Wisconsin chicken. A tender, moist grilled chicken breast smothered in a mouth watering creamy blue cheese and mushroom sauce, served on a bed of buttery mashed potato and topped with prosciutto-wrapped char-grilled asparagus. This was a very hearty dish, and the blue cheese came through with every bite. I highly recommend this dish, what a winner.

Of course I couldn’t leave without first trying the famous Frisco burger, in fact, I think you too, should try this great all round American burger. A tasty meat patty with egg, crispy bacon, fresh red onion, tomato sauce and mustard topped with cheddar cheese in a soft sesame seed bun all served with a side of steak fries.PrawnsSmall

Time for my favourite part of the meal, dessert. Of course I had to sample the American Apple Pie, it just wouldn’t be right otherwise. Sweet, soft pastry filled with luscious chunks of baked apple. Oh sweet apple pie heaven… is this Nanna’s recipe? You simply can’t go wrong ending a good meal with this.

When chatting with Dave, the Chef and mastermind of Frisco’s, after finishing the wonderful meal he’d made, I discovered he’d lived in New York and Pittsburgh as well as in San Diego for a couple of years, so you would expect he would know a thing or two about good quality American food. I decided he definitely did, especially after finishing every last morsel of that American Apple Pie…
