FREO COFFEE KINGS GET KEYS TO NEW KINGDOM

Fremantle Coffee FestivalThe popular local proprietor of one of Freo’s finest brews is joining forces with a master brewer from overseas to create a new coffee hub that will bring much-needed life to a neglected retail precinct behind Market Street in Fremantle.

Owner/manager/barista of Black Cherries Espresso coffee bar in the Freo Markets: Tim Lock, has teamed up with Karim Decima – roaster and former West Coast guru for the esteemed Toby’s Estate Coffee company – and the intrepid pair have just secured the keys to a new, much larger venue that is sure to help satisfy Freo’s insatiable appetite for quality coffee.

Red Cherries Coffee Bar will take over the space formerly occupied by The Raw Kitchen in the South Terrace Piazza and the guys are just putting the finishing touches to the fit-out in anticipation of a major launch at their opening.

Passionate about coffee quality, Tim and Karim will control the coffee process throughout, as they will use only their own blend of coffee mainly sourced from East Africa and Central/South America, and roasted at their own roastery in nearby O’Connor, under the label Atlas Coffee Roasters.

Lovers of Black Cherries in the Freo Markets should not despair, however, as this much loved icon will remain open Friday to Sunday and all public holidays; and will continue to cater to coffee lovers meandering through the markets.

The dynamic duo are excited about the new venture and are looking forward to working with a passionate and skilful team – looking at ways not just to make Red Cherries a hub for coffee, but also as a community meeting place – a haven for creative souls like themselves.

Tim has commissioned local artist Natalie Houston to paint a fresco/mural on the outside of the new cafe with an African and Central/South American theme, in keeping with the source nations of their coffee. And no doubt, Karim will draw heavily on his French and Moroccan heritage to bring his own flair to their new home.

The owners are now sourcing food options that will complement the finest coffee, tea and chai, with the focus on local, fresh, quality offerings from Freo bakers and chefs; and are in discussions with the City of Fremantle on how to make the space a hub for musicians, artists and live music to revitalise the South Street precinct.
