Australia’s Fair Trade Fortnight 2012 celebration has kicked off again and will commence till the 20th this month. This year’s event is themed Every Choice Matters.

In conjunction with the Fair Trade Fortnight 2012, The Students in Free Enterprise of UWA, Oxfam Australia WA State Committee, and the WA Fair Trade Collective, have all join forces to in launching the Fair Trade Pop Up Store – which runs throughout the Fair Trade Fortnight celebration.

Carillon City in Perth CBD, is where the Pop Up Store nests this year. The aim of launching the store is to spread awareness about Fair Trade products as a retail option and social responsibility amongst students, young professionals, and the Perth community.

Besides the Pop Up Store, there will also be a lecture-screening by prizewinning investigative journalist Miki Mistrati, on the harsh realities of the chocolate industry (illegal child labour) – The Dark Side of Chocolate. That will take place on May 11, in the Fremantle Town Hall. Tickets cost $25/$20 (concession), and can be purchased at the Oxfam shop on 22 Queen Street, Fremantle.

The Dark Side of Chocolate includes a pantry of Fair Trade Moroccan foods, LaJacoba Coffee, Oxfam Tea, Fairtrade Chocolate Fountain, and more.

Every year, the celebration and growth of fair trade support and the life-changing difference it has made around the world to farmers, producers, and the communities in developing countries increases.

Today, nearly 1.2 million farmers and workers, benefit from The Fairtrade Certification system. Every time someone purchases a Fairtrade Certified product, the trade justice system is strengthened.

Meet ex-WA-Police-detective Oscar Persichitti who trains organisations and people in investigative techniques …

Oscar Persichitti was with WA Police for over 18 years, leaving at the rank of detective sergeant. Mostly he was a detective investigating serious crime, fraud, armed robbery and organised crime.

He later became the senior trainer at the Joondalup Police Academy detective training school.

Oscar represented WA Police at the 2nd International Conference on Investigative Interviewing 2006 in Portsmouth, U.K. He’s spoken at scores of seminars including a professional development seminar for Australian & NZ parliamentary staff at Parliament House, Perth and at the Australian & NZ Institute of Insurance and Finance Fraud conference.

Oscar, what is Investigation Training?

Investigation training is usually sought out by employees carrying out investigations and compliance tasks. It gives attendees the knowledge and skills required to conduct effective investigations which are capable of withstanding scrutiny from outside bodies.

Conducting investigations is a process. If you get it right, the size and type of investigation becomes inconsequential. The part of an investigator is to identify, gather, collate and analyse information to determine the cause of an incident. The investigation may focus on root causes in order to prevent future occurrences, involve breaches of legislation or disciplinary regulations.

Regardless of the type of investigation, an investigator must be aware of her or his legal responsibilities and ensure it is fair and just to all. It is therefore vital that it complies with appropriate legal requirements, including criminal and civil legislation. For instance, it’s necessary to remember that an incident investigation can be referred to the Coroner’s Court who publicly assess the competency of that investigator and her or his organisation.

Who uses investigative training?

Compliance staff, HR Professionals when investigating disciplinary matters, OHS personnel when investigating incidents or near misses, all regulatory bodies who enforce compliance to legislative acts and regulations including – Customs, Fisheries, ASIC, etc.

Was this knowledge developed overseas as a formal training method?

Not investigation training as such, but investigative interviewing did come out of Great Britain.

The interviewing of witnesses and suspects is one of the most important aspects of any investigation as on most occasions the successful outcome hinges largely on the information obtained from witnesses and the suspects themselves.

In the early 1990s, the United Kingdom (UK) came under intense scrutiny in the way that police officers were conducting interviews. As a result, a Steering Party co-ordinated by the Home Office (UK), conducted research to gauge why police conducted interviews so poorly.

Research conducted by Professor Baldwin found that:

• Police received no formal training in this science
• Poor Planning
• Lack of understanding of their role and the role of the eyewitness
• Poor knowledge of the relevant law
• A general lack of enthusiasm/care for their work

Following the outcomes of this research, a National (UK) interviewing training package, (called “Investigative interviewing”) commenced in 1993 with its theoretical structure is now adopted world-wide, including policing jurisdictions within Australia.

Investigative Interviewing has taken over as the preferred way of interviewing victims, witnesses and suspects. The concept is based on an “information gathering” approach as opposed to an “interrogation” style of interviewing. It also uses the theory of how the human cognitive process works to assist with information retrieval.

At what point did you realise that you wanted to step into delivering this knowledge independently?

Having spent the majority of my working life in operations – on the frontline – I decided to give training a go. I found it most enjoyable and very rewarding. It became my passion and I decided to challenge myself – venture into the world of corporate Australia in the training field. From scratch!

I started off delivering conflict resolution – another speciality of mine – where I draw on my many conversations with people from all walks of life – and continued to train in Investigations and Interviewing. Then the GFC struck … I held on tight – built relationships – made my presentations entertaining and valuable – with my partnerships offered accredited training … and here I am today, building one success story after another – hopefully anyway!

Why are these skills becoming important to government and the private sector?

Businesses and government agencies are becoming more accountable for their people and other resources. Occupational Health & Safety is attached to key indicators with most businesses and are very accountable to the OHS Regulatory bodies, which means incidents need to be investigated and are often reviewed by external agencies like the Coroner’s Office.

This quintessential Australian game runs at the Casino all year round, and Burswood has supported the RSL on ANZAC Day since the Complex opened, making the 26-year relationship Burswood’s longest standing community partnership.

Every year, we pause to reflect on the courage and sacrifices made by all past and present servicemen and women, and as a mark of respect, the Casino is closed on ANZAC Day from 3am re-opening at 12 noon on Wednesday, 25 April.

Chief Executive Officer, Barry Felstead said that Burswood was proud to have a long-term partnership with the local RSL WA branch.
“Burswood remembers the ANZACs with gratitude and pride every year and we are honoured to support the RSL WA branch with their valuable service to the community, and their ongoing commitment to the services and welfare for veterans,” said Mr Felstead.
Upon re-opening, Burswood will offer a special lunch deal on ANZAC Day where RSL members can enjoy fish and chips with a soft drink for just $5.00 upon presentation of an RSL membership card. This offer is valid for two people and is available only on Wednesday, 25 April 2012. Snax is a snack bar located in the Casino at Burswood, and is an adult venue only.

One group of Colombian Coffee farmers have found a way.

Mauricio Velasquez is the Australian Representative of Asprounion, a Fairtrade, certified co-operative responsible for the new la Jacoba Coffee . He says that West Australians are increasingly supportive of initiatives such as Fairtrade, which (through cutting out the middlemen) deliver a greater share of the profits to growers around the world. Coffee lovers will be able to satisfy their taste for superior quality beans, and support Colombian Farmers at the same time. La Jacoba beans are Special Reserve, single region Arabica beans, which are independently certified as Specialty Coffee grade, and are 100% Fairtrade.

While most coffee growers sell their raw green beans to multinationals (an arrangement which generally doesn’t benefit farmers) ASPROUNION roasts, packages, exports and markets it. This value-adding element is unusual among the world’s coffee farmers, and means that more local jobs are created and more of the profits stay within their communities.
“A lot of coffee farmers in Columbia and elsewhere get very little money for their hard work,” explains Velasquez, who used to live in Columbia.
“After coffee brokers take their cut, those who grew the coffee are always left with very little.”

Velasquez hopes West Australians will become ‘partners’ by buying Fairtrade certified coffee. To become a partner, check out La Jacoba online.

It’s a celebration of what’s great about our lifestyle here in Perth; multi cultural food coming together in a cosy atmosphere whilst embracing the love of the outdoors; quality snags, fresh salads & European small goods coupled with a quirky fit out & all delivered in urban Leedy

Quality snags are obviously an important part of the business, but there is much more to it – The team have tried in part to create a fun, nostalgic butcher’s shop/deli/workman’s cafe, you know, that corner/tuck shop that we all grew up with.

Expect quality European cold cuts, local sausages, fresh baby baguettes (no par bakes here) & fresh salads made ‘on site, plus beautiful breakfasts, a plethora of sweet tooth treats and much more!

Savvy suppliers are integral to their business model & they have a local cast of passionate players or indeed friends on their team. Expect pork from Linley Valley, nougat from Rochelle Adonis, chutney from Goan Cuisine, as well as products from Riki Kaspi, Twisted Pickle, Elmar’s Small Goods and more.

Please check out their menu for a better idea on what to expect – or just go to Leedy and give it a taste!
